On the 12th of April we celebrated our New Life Festival. The children had been looking forward to it as we were practising the festival songs and poems daily prior to it. They were especially excited over the annual egg hunting and puppet show.
On the day of the festival, the children coloured eggs in the morning to be taken home. Then, after the morning snack, we gathered in the class hall to watch the puppet show. The teachers prepared a special puppet show based on the New Life theme. It was about the friendship between a caterpillar and a girl. The girl felt the loss when the caterpillar that she had befriended in the garden went missing after a few days. She did not know that the caterpillar had turned into a cocoon so she felt sad. But things changed when she met a friendly rabbit and Mr. Gnome who gave her hope of finding her caterpillar friend again. She followed them to a flower garden where she saw a beautiful butterfly flying about. The butterfly was actually her good friend, Mr Caterpillar, who had transformed into a butterfly. She was very happy to know that.
After the puppet show, the children got ready to hunt for the New Life eggs in the garden. The eggs consisted of small and big ones. They eagerly searched through the garden and collected all the eggs they found in their baskets. During the hunt, we noticed that some children who collected more than 1 egg shared their extra egg with other children who had not found any. Others simply enjoyed hunting for eggs together with their friends, without thinking about the number of eggs collected.
Later on, the big children helped to peel off the egg shells and halve the eggs using strings. The eggs which they helped prepare were then served during lunch. All of them enjoyed eating the eggs. After lunch, the big children also helped to count the groundnuts and packed the New Life bags to be taken home. Each child was excited to take home his/her bag of New Life treasures that day.
Speaking of the garden and new life, our vegetable bed has been providing for our friends in the garden, the snails. When new seeds are planted, the young shoots which grow always attract the snails. However, the children understand and accept that the greens are Mr Snail’s favourite food. So, they are happy that the Mr Snails are happy with their garden salad. All in all, it is good to see the garden’s diverse life forms thriving.
As usual, the children are enjoying their play and artistic activities. But recently, the children became more interested in origami and have been learning new origami ideas and practising their skills. Some even taught their friends whatever they learnt from teachers or the books provided. This new interest which has helped the children bond as well as enhance their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
The children are busy making Mother’s Day wall cards and flowers for their mothers. They will bring the cards and flowers home on 11th May [Thursday]. We also would like to wish all mothers ‘Happy Mother’s Day’.
During the month, we experienced some days which were hotter than regular days. So we have been encouraging the children to drink more water to stay hydrated and healthy.
On the last week of April, Teacher Kerry dropped by Nania for a short visit. She brought her baby along. Everyone was very excited to see them!
