I wish to thank you for your turn out and support during the Chinese New Year festival celebration.  It was heart-warming to watch how you paid full attention to support your children when they were singing and dancing.  From looking at the photographs taken on that day, we notice that they have put in a great effort to give everyone a good time that morning.

The new children who have joined us for slightly over a month tried their very best to perform in front of the large crowd of adults.  Some of them felt overwhelmed and shied away from the presentation but a father who spontaneously joined us in the dance saved the day! He inspired all the children to dance along and everyone had a wonderful time!

In fact, earlier on, some parents already shared with me that their children were able to sing the Chinese New Year songs and dance at home.  Let us continue to give them our positive support and one of these days they will gain enough confidence to showcase their capabilities.

Now that we are in the third month of the school calendar, Teacher Elina and I are trying to let the children, especially the new ones, learn to do as many things as they can on their own.  Through imitations and their own will, they are trying to follow the class daily rhythms by now. The first thing that they do upon arrival is to unpack their own bags.  They then settle down to complete the morning artistic activities before proceeding to play with their classmates. We encourage them to be creative and to play harmoniously with their peers or even the bigger ‘che-che’ and ‘ko-ko’ in the class. However, one or two of the younger ones still prefer a teacher’s lead to begin their creative play.

They cook and serve everyone happily in the kitchen corner. Using dividers as motor vehicles, they travel to imaginary destinations. They decorate the houses that they have built with drapes that made up of braided yarns. Later, they take their pets for a walk or change clothes for the dolls. On many occasions, they drape themselves with a cloth of rainbow hues and hence are transformed into princesses or princes!

Their favorite plays during the outdoor playtime are playing sand in the sandpit, jumping on the trampoline and flying their origami kites. The new children approach Aunty Janet to get the carrot peels to feed the rabbit.

After coming in from the outside, some need a little help to change but most of them can manage by themselves. They then fold their ‘used’ clothes to bring home to wash.  The children are actually very happy to be able to do things on their own.  Once they can change by themselves on that day, they are pleased to point it out to us.  As such, please do the same at home by giving them minimal help only and very soon they will be able to show you their independence.  I am sure every parent is looking forward to that day, right!

When the children in Nania gather around for snacks and lunch, we give thanks for the food before we begin to eat.  Most of them will cultivate the habit of saying thanks for the food even when you are at a restaurant.  Well, we teachers sometimes do that too when we eat outside and I think it is a great sight to see people giving thanks to the food before they begin.

The children clear their own plates, cups, cutlery, table clothes and towels after lunch. It is part of their routine now.  When the new children are more attuned to Nania’s rhythm, they will be requested to set the tables for lunch on certain days in a week just like the 5 and 6 years old who are capable of doing that now.  We hope that their daily lives at home mirror the activities in the kindergarten so that they pick up good habits that will sustain them in life as they grow.

We are putting the Friday’s water play on hold at this moment because Teacher Elina’s arm needs a bit more time to recover. At the moment, she can’t help in the management of the mobile pool.  We will keep you informed when water play resumes.
