 Dear parents,

Thank you to all of you who attended the Chinese New Year Festival. The children felt your support when they saw you attending the festival.

Days before the Chinese New Year Festival, we were busy with preparations which helped the children get into the festive mood. The children practised folding Ribbon Kuih by using origami papers. On the day we made Ribbon Kuih, the big children helped to cut the folding line. Then all of us folded the Ribbon Kuih and Auntie Janet helped us to fry them. We hope you liked the Ribbon Kuih that was made by the children. The children also made ornaments with ang pows and hung them in the garden. The children were getting excited as the festival was approaching.

The Chinese New Year Festival is the first festival for the newcomers in the English Class. Surprisingly, they were not shy to perform in front of parents. This year, it was very close to start of the new term and the children had only 3 weeks to practise the songs and poems. Despite the time limitation, we were happy to see that the children enjoyed themselves during that morning. Most of the older children became more confident and participated willingly.

After the festival and Chinese New Year celebration, some children still talked about the lion dance and some boys continued to play drum and lion dance during their creative play. Some children also played “flutes”.

Recently, eight Form 2 students from Penang Japanese School visited us. They gave origami that they made as present for the class. Children were amazed with their creativity. We had a picnic with the big “koko” and “jiejie” in the garden.

We start the year 2023 with some celebrations that bring new hope and wishing for a good year. We had a touring to see the Thaipusam booth near Nania. Children pray and wish for their good health and happiness.

We also celebrated Bean Throwing Day. That was a good chance for children to make wishes that all people can be safe and healthy too. The children wore masks and went out to the garden with a box of soybeans. We scattered the soybeans as a symbolic desire to get rid of sickness and sadness while welcoming goodness and happiness for the coming year. Children called out “Sickness, sadness outside; happiness inside.” while they scattered the beans against the demon which represented sickness or sadness. After that, the children collected the scattered soybeans and planted them in the vegetable patch.

Whenever we pray with the children, we truly believe in the power of prayer. Children who are naturally still connected to the spiritual world always touch us with their pure hearts.

Our 3 graduating big children are looking forward for their big day. The Graduation Ceremony is just at the corner. Please send your child/children punctually to Nania on Friday morning. A gentle reminderfor the parents of the non-graduating children to pick them up at 11.20am as we have other activities reserved only for the graduating children on that day. There will be no day care on the day. Thank you for your co-operation.

Girls’ Day Celebration (3rd March 2023)

We will celebrate the Japanese Girls’ Day Festival (Hinamatsuri) with the children on 3rd  March (Friday).  The dolls in traditional kimonos displayed at the Festival corner are praying for the well-being of girls.  The dolls are called hina-ningyo and the custom is also known as momo-no sekku (Peach Festival) because it is the peach blossom season on the old lunar calendar.  In some areas, nagashibina, the old custom of loading one’s troubles onto a paper doll and floating them off down the river is still practised.

Most Japanese families with girls display hina-ningyo and dedicate peach blossoms to them.  They are usually arranged on a five or seven-tiered stand covered with a red carpet.  At the top are the Emperor and Empress.  On the next level sit three court ladies, followed by five musicians, two ministers, and three servants at the bottom row of a five-tiered display.  Displays may include small pieces of furniture, meal dishes, and other things.  The hina-ningyo at Nania was hand made by a child’s mother.

The children have folded paper dolls to be used as wall decorations.  They will bring home the wall decorations on the festival day.
