2019 sure went by fast! Although a little late I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Nania team, to wish you Happy New Year.

We hope you had a lovely Chinese New Year celebration with your family and friends too. Chinese New Year is an important festival for the Chinese community. It is a time for family reunions. At Nania, the children had experienced the Chinese New Year mood when we learnt and practised poems, songs and dances for the festival. This year it was a pretty short time for the children to prepare themselves. The big children willingly sacrificed their outdoor playtime to rehearse for their dance performance. We were proud to see their willingness. We also wish you a healthy and prosperous Year of the Rat! It’s good to look ahead and think about what this year may bring us.

We bid “Welcome Back” to all our children after the year-end break. Before the school re-opened, we came back for a few days to clean the whole house and also to wash the curtains, play cloths and play material. We also did some minor upgrades and repainted the treehouse, bamboo and the cement tunnel. It is a pleasure to know that our children observed the changes. A boy asked us why the garden looks “clean” instead of asking, “Did you repaint?”

We have 2 new children who joined us this year. Since they are 3 and 4 years old, there was some separation anxiety. However, they get over it in a very short period and have settled to the daily rhythm.

The seven 6-year-old children enjoy being addressed as ‘ko-ko’ and ‘che-che’ and have eagerly taken on the role of the big children in the class. They have started weaving, reading and writing. They waited to experience this and thus I understand their enthusiasm in doing what their seniors did previously. We are happy to report that the other groups of children have settled down well too. Most of the times we observe the children playing happily in the different corners of the classroom.

The New Year also brought us extremely hot weather, no rain and the scare of the coronavirus. This virus is contagious. At Nania, we remind children to drink plenty of water to keep their throat moist. For parents, please avoid crowded places such as the market, malls or if you have to go, please wear a mask as a precaution. Be very vigilant.

Let us take a moment to say a prayer for all the people who have lost their lives due to this virus. We did that together with all the children and they prayed sincerely from their hearts.
