News / Nunn Road / 2022 / January 2022

We have gone through 2021 together. Thank you for your cooperation, understanding and support over the troubled year.  Your trust and co-operation strengthen us to face the challenges.  We hope for a better year in 2022.

As usual with our year end routine, we teachers came back to Nania a few days before school reopen to prepare and ready everything to welcome back the children. We cleaned the space, washed and sunbathe all the toys, dyed the cloths and repaired toys.

Some children mentioned they looked forward to come back to Nania during school holidays.  They missed their friends.  They noticed that there are more toys in the classroom when they came back.  They were so happy.  They have already used all the toys creatively during their freeplay time.

This year, we welcome 4 new children to the English Class.  One 3-year-old boy (Wang Yu), one 4-year-old boy (Yi Shen) and one 3-year-old girl (Yen Nee) joined us.  The children are slowly settling down.  Another 3-year-old boy (Olivier) will join us soon.

Now we have 1 big ‘koko’ and 2 big ‘jie jie’ in the class.  They have started their afternoon literacy time.  They are eager to do what they have seen the big children do last year.  They have also started to weave happily during their free time.

For this new school term, we seek your cooperation to bring your child to Nania punctually. Arriving to class by 9a.m. gives children enough time to do artistic work and play.  When children come late, they either miss out the artistic work or do not have enough time for creative play. Children will then feel unhappy when it’s time to clear up.

We have morning gathering where we greet each other and pray for our absentees.  If your child is absent because of sickness, please inform Teacher Ang (H/p no:012-4105081) before 8.30a.m. so that we can wish him or her speedy recovery. For new parents, please note teachers cannot attend to our handphone after 8.30am. We will be engaged with the children in the classroom. Please contact the office (04-2265480) if you need to contact us later than 8.30am.

The class is now filled with the Chinese New Year celebration mood. The children are busy making the Chinese New Year decoration ornaments. Perhaps you will have heard your child practicing poems and songs for the coming Chinese New Year Festival.  You can sing along with your child.  The song sheet was sent out to you earlier. Hopefully the songs will bring back your happy childhood memories about Chinese New Year. The children are trying their very best during practice sessions. However, during the actual day, some young children may need teachers’ encouragement to participate bravely.

Please take note that we will make Ribbon Kuih on the 26th Jan (Wednesday) and children will bring them home the next day.

Children will celebrate the Chinese New Year on 28th Jan (Friday). We encourage children to wear a traditional Chinese costume if they have any. They will do the presentation, enjoy the special snacks, watch a Chinese New Year puppet show and Lion Dance. We are sorry we are also not able to invite parents to join the festival this year. We will send you some photos and video clips of the celebration.

For your information, we will close from 31st January (Monday) to 4th February (Friday) for the Chinese New Year holidays. We will re-open on 7th Jan (Monday).

All of us at Nania would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’.

Setsubun/Japanese Bean Throwing Day

This festival takes place on the day before Risshun (立春), the first day of spring in the Chinese calendar.  Soybeans are scattered in and around the house to drive out sickness and misfortune which are represented by demons.  (This custom is called mamemaki.)

For this celebration, the children make origami boxes for storing soybeans and also a mask of a demon or a deity of happiness. On the day, the children wear their mask as they scatter the soybeans. Theywill call out, ”Sickness, sadness outside; happiness inside.” We celebrate the festival in the garden.

Later, the children will collect the scattered soybeans and plant them in the vegetable bed.  When the plants bear fruits, we harvest and boil the ‘Edamame” for the children to eat during lunch time.
