News / Nunn Road / 2023 / January 2023

 Dear parents,

Have you noticed that the purple flowers (garlic vine) were blossoming to welcome all of you after the school holidays?

As usual, we teachers came back to Nania a few days before the school reopened to clean the space, wash and sunbathe all the toys, dye the cloths and repair toys. We got everything ready to welcome back the children.

This year, we welcomed 4 new children to the English Class. One 6-year-old girl, one 5-year-old boy, one 4-year-old girl and one boy turning 3 joined us. Now we have 18 children in the class. Hugo will be back to join us after the Chinese New Year Festival.

Now we have 3 graduating big children and another 2 big ‘koko’ and 2 big ‘jie jie’ in the class. The new batch of big children have started their afternoon literacy time.  They are eager to do what they have seen the big children do last year.  They have also started to weave happily during their free time. While the graduating big children deepen their learning and they will start to practice for their graduation after the Chinese New Year holidays.

Meanwhile, the 5-year-old children will start to play a leading role in the afternoon creative play. They play at the kitchen corner while the big children are having their lesson time at another corner. Younger children are getting independent day by day.

As we start this new year, I seek your cooperation to bring your child to Nania punctually. Arriving to class by 9a.m. gives children enough time to do artistic work and play. When children come late, they either miss out the artistic work or do not have enough time for creative play.

We have morning gathering where we greet each other and pray for our absentees. If your child is absent because of sickness, please inform the class teacher before 8.30a.m. so that we can wish him or her speedy recovery. For new parents, teachers don’t attend to our handphone frequently after 8.30am. as we will be in the classroom engaging with the children. So, you have to contact the office (04-2265480) if it is later than 8.30am.

We are going to make photo album as farewell gift. In February, there are 3 graduating children. We will use the photos of children that we took for them last year (the report card photo), For new children who join in January 2023, we will need parents’ help to prepare the 4R photo. We also need all parents to prepare a 4R size card for farewell message. You may cut children’s painting into 4R size or use any card you have at home. Children can then draw or write message for Jordan, J’ Ern and Xin Er on the card. Kindly pass the cards to us after the Chinese New Year holidays.

Chinese New Year is just around the corner. The children are trying their very best during practice sessions for the upcoming Chinese New Year festival. However, during the actual day, some young children may need your encouragement to participate bravely in front of all the adults present that day.I look forward to seeing you and your family on the 18th Jan (Tuesday).  For your information, a family couldn’t join us on the 18th. So, we invited the parents to join us on 20th ringtime. The Chinese New Year holiday from the 23rd till the 27th Jan. We re-open on 30th Jan (Monday).

All of us at Nania would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’.

Notes regarding the Chinese New Year Festival

The children will make ribbon kuih on 16th Jan (Monday) for the festival.

The children will enjoy puppet show and Chinese New Year snack time on 17th Jan (Tuesday) morning.

We would like to encourage the children to come in traditional Chinese New Year clothes on presentation day (18th Jan, Wednesday) as it helps them to be in the festive mood.  This is not mandatory but your consideration is much appreciated.

Parents who attend the presentation must do self test and send the result to us.

Kindly park your car at the roadside and enter by the main gate.

Please drop your child/children at the kitchen side gate before 9am. Please be on time.

We would appreciate it if everyone could keep their voices down.

It is sometimes difficult for young children to join in the festival presentation because of the crowd.  We encourage parents to sing along with their younger children to support their participation.

Setsubun/Japanese Bean Throwing Day

This festival takes place on the day before Risshun, the first day of spring in the Chinese calendar.  Soybeans are scattered in and around the house to drive out sickness and misfortune which are represented by demons.  (This custom is called mamemaki.)

For this celebration, the children make origami boxes for storing soybeans and also a mask of the demon or the god of happiness. On that day, the children wear the masks as they scatter the soybeans.  We will celebrate the festival in the garden.

Later, the children will collect the scattered soybeans and plant them in the vegetable bed.  When the plants bear fruits, we harvest and boil the ‘Edamame” for the children to eat during lunch time.
