 Dear Parents,

Every year, the Rambutan Tree in Nania’s garden bear fruits for us. Children learnt to be patient waiting for the fruits to be ripe. Every day they observe the rambutans’ color. They wish the rambutans to turn red soon so that we can harvest them. This waiting experience of observing in anticipation and excitement is important for young children nowadays, as they get many things instantly from supermarket.

This year, we have a special guest who shared the rambutan with us. The Dusky Langur, a type of monkey, came to enjoy the fruits in the morning. Before the term break holidays, children enjoyed the rambutans plucked by the gardener. While some children enjoy the sweetness of the fruit, some children still need more time to accept the fruit.

After we came back from the holidays, we were glad that the corns in our garden were ripen. We harvested them and children helped to peel off the skin. Later, Auntie Janet helped us to steam the corns and served them as our afternoon snack. Some children who didn’t like corn also tried to eat the corn because they had been involve in the process of planting, watering, harvesting and cleaning. They felt the special connection and are more open to accept. You may plant some vegetables with your child/children in your garden or even your balcony.

Tanabata Day is drawing near so we wrote down the children’s wishes so that we can hang them on the bamboo leaves to bring them back to you.  We enjoyed writing wishes with them as we could uncover many interesting tales from their young minds.

The children will make their own lanterns using the paintings that they have done.  They will draw the sun, the moon and stars on their lanterns, cut them out and cover the open spaces with colourful crepe paper.  They also will weave their lantern string through the process of ‘twisting’ or ‘guru-guru’ using colourful yarns that they have chosen. This string will become the handle for their own lantern.

Perhaps after they have made one on their own, then they can show you how to make the same lantern for their siblings.  Anyway, I have enclosed herewith the instructions for making the lantern in this newsletter.

We have also started to practice songs, poems and a dance for the coming Lantern Day.  Hence, we would like to extend our invitation to you and your family to join us on that day. Please come on time so that the children can join the performance on time.

Tanabata Celebration (6th July, 2022)

During this day of the year, according to the Chinese and Japanese folktales, the Weaver Princess and the Cowherd meet across the Milky Way to renew their love for each other.  The children will make Tanzaku with their wishes for this celebration.  Tanzaku and other things placed in the house are a way of entreating better things to come. The teachers intend to cut the bamboo branches on the evening of 4th July, as we are celebrating the Tanabata on 6th July.

About the Lantern Festival Celebration

We couldn’t celebrate the Latern Festival in Nania’s garden in the past two years due to the pandemic. We are glad that we can meet again this year. The Nania Lantern Festival brings together elements from the Chinese Lantern Festival and the Japanese Summer Bon Festival.

Bon is one of Japan’s summer festivals and is a time when people make offerings of food and other things to their ancestors and pray for the happiness of their ancestors’ souls in the next world. It takes place from the 13th to 15th of August, and during this time the folk dance known as Bon Odori can be seen in cities, towns and villages all over Japan.

On the festival day, children will make dango (rice dumpling) in the morning for the evening festival snack.  They will start the evening with songs, a dance and then enjoy the snack they have made themselves. Then, they will do a lantern walk with their handmade lanterns.

At Nania we use candles for story time, birthdays and farewells. Candles, as lights on the Earth, are used to represent the lights in Heaven in our cultural activities. The sight of Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon and Mr. Star fill the children with wonder and awe. As Mr. Candle’s light graces their activity it brings a sense of solemnity and dignity to the children. The lantern walk during the Lantern Festival offers a moment of communion in the children’s hearts between the lights on earth and the lights in the heavens.

The children have painted the paper that they will use to make their lanterns. Parents are encouraged to make lanterns with the children’s siblings for the lantern walk on that night.
