News / Halaman York / 2017 / May & June 2017

Time has passed us by so fast that the first half of the year is almost gone. The month of May is a month of celebration of sorts. There were many birthday celebrations, the children prepared their handmade gifts for Mother’s Day and finally, there was Bento Day.

On Bento Day [24th May 2017], it was bright and sunny and that was a perfect fit for Bento days as we have our lunch outdoors. Prior to Bento Day, the children made their own wallets and purses as well as some mock money. On that day, the big children helped to pack food into the Bento boxes. The children then experienced “buying” their own Bento food. After ‘buying’ their Bento sets, everyone ate from their Bento boxes outdoors. We liked the picnic-like atmosphere of eating in the garden and for the first-timers, it was also a good experience of having different food.

During play in the classroom, the children are coming up with more original ideas which never cease to fascinate us. Sometimes, they would role-play various characters from a diver in the deep blue sea who befriends and protects sharks to a cowgirl exploring new places. They use the toys and materials in class in creative and individualistic ways to express their ideas. Their play exhibit their potential and ingenuity.

As for the big children, they are keen learners. They are picking up on their lessons well and sometimes we hear them discussing the lessons and sharing the sound or spellings of words with each other during conversations or when looking at a book together. It is a delight to observe their joy of learning.

We will slowly transform the colours in the display corner to green and yellow with candles and handmade ketupat. The children who have experienced this before know that Hari Raya Puasa is coming. We will start singing Hari Raya songs soon.

We will be celebrating Harvest Festival on the morning of the 6thJuly [Thursday].  All parents and siblings are cordially invited to come and join us.  After the Hari Raya celebration, the children will practice poems and songs for the Harvest Festival.

In Nania, we celebrate Harvest Festival with a thankful heart to Mother Nature for sun, rain and wind.  Through the poems and songs, the children express their gratefulness for the food on their plates and also to the farmers who work hard to grow the crops as well as to their parents who lovingly prepare food for them.
