Graduation Day dawned wonderful and beautiful on the second week of November. The children arrived early in the morning happy and joyous and anticipating meaningful moments.

Despite 3 children absent due to illness, the rest of the children turned up to give full support to the ‘ko-ko’’ and ‘’che-che’’.  We wish to acknowledge the support of the younger children’s because the majority of you are working parents.  Yet you brought your children for the few important hours that day in order for them to cheer their graduating ‘’ko-ko and che-che”.

We ‘spring-cleaned’ and decorated the classroom on the eve of that important day. Fresh flowers were the final touches on the day itself and voila, the room was transformed!

While waiting, the children drew and after that, played happily and creatively in the Japanese classroom, as it was a day-off for the Japanese children.  They cleared up when it was time to do so and proceeded to have the morning snack.

The children sang and prayed for their absent friends while waiting for the arrival of the graduates’ parents.  As it happened that a few children were not well on that day, so a smaller group of children turned up to celebrate the happy occasion with the graduates.  Despite that, all of them were in good spirits and congratulated the graduates appropriately.

Once the ceremony got underway, the graduating children took over the morning presentation.  They stood upright and brilliantly presented one after another the programme for the day.

They gave speeches, sang, recited Chinese moral verses and Bahasa Malaysia suku-kata well and even played a game or two with the younger children.  I must say the younger children co-operated very well.  Not only did they sit down patiently during the hour-long presentation, they also congratulated the ‘ko-ko and che-che’ by giving their drawings as presents.

The highlights of the ceremony have to be when they recited the action poem ‘I am a Star’.  They wore their beautiful drawn ‘star crown’ on their head.  Next, they sang and danced to the song “Rasa Sayang” with the accompaniment of the musical instruments that they had made themselves earlier.

The smaller children watched in awe at the performances by their ‘ko-ko’ and ‘che-che’ and I am sure they look forward to the day when it will be their turn to do so. Some of the younger children have imitated the movements of “I am a Star” at home and in the classroom.

These 4 children have spent many meaningful and wonderful days with us in Nania.  I have watched them transform into little boys and girls who are capable, creative, caring and independent. Nania has given them the happy childhood that will stay in their memories forever.  They are all now leaving us as children who are capable of walking confidently into the next phase of life’s journey.

I have grown to love the children and they me.  Even though I am leaving Nania after this year, but the days that I have spent here and the precious memories that I have with the children, I will treasure and keep in my heart forever.   I will make every opportunity to visit Nania whenever I can.
